
Situated 17 miles (approx.) North West of Aylesbury, 19 miles (approx.) South of Northampton and 12 miles (approx.) to the West of Milton Keynes is historic Buckingham. A town which still has many older buildings remaining, even after a disastrous fire in 1725
The Castle House, The Old Latin school with its splendid Norman doorway and the house with the 'twisted' chimney built of specially shaped Tudor Bricks, are just a few of its outstanding features.
The Old Gaol was built in 1758 and was originally square. The semi-circular residence was added in 1839 and although the Gaol now houses a museum and a shop, it still has four of the six upper cells in almost their original condition. Although the Gaol looks impressive it was rarely full of prisoners, as it had no water supply and the gaoler received no wages.
Surrounded on 3 sides by the The River Great Ouse, the former county town of Buckinghamshire, has increased in population greatly over the past 15 years and is now the second largest town in Aylesbury Vale, having an estimated population in 1994 of 10,000.
The Parish Church of S.S. Peter and Paul, is an awesome sight. Completed in 1781, but partly built in the19th Century, it occupies the site of the Saxon Castle on Church Hill.
The University of Buckingham was founded in 1973, as the University College of Buckingham, its first students were admitted in 1976. By 1994 it was rewarded by the grant of a Royal Charter, which conferred full university status.
There are two main industrial sites, comprising of both old established and more recently opened factories, they are located at the Tingewick Road Industrial Park and Buckingham Industrial Park. The latter also houses a waste disposal facility run by bucks County Council, which offers efficient disposal of all types of waste, including household waste, paper and furniture.
The 'Slade Centre' is also situated on Buckingham Industrial Park, it provides membership and facilities to include indoor bowling, billiards and snooker.
The Swan Centre, opened in 1996 and offers two swimming pools, sports and keep fit facilities, including a gymnasium and aerobic classes.
There are many interesting walks in and around Buckingham and play areas for children are located in Overn Avenue, Bridge Street, Chandos Park, Bourton Park and next to Buckingham Athletic FC.
